How Graphic Design Can Positively Impact Mental Health

Dec 06, 2017

London-based magazine It’s Nice That spoke to GraphicDesign& about the role of graphic design in the world of mental health. The two co-founders and an associate at the publishing house outlined three projects that successfully supported and impacted well-being.

“As advocates for our subject, we believe that designers and creatives have much to contribute to the area of mental health, where imagination and ingenuity can transform the communication, diagnosis, awareness and support,” the GraphicDesign& team said.

Here’s what they came up with.

Graphic Designer Ollie Alpin’s “Mindjournal”

Alpin had personal experience with mental health issues and he wanted to come up with something aimed at men, who are less likely than women to talk about their feelings. So what did he do? He sought input from academics, psychologists and other experts and designed a discreet and stylish hard-bound journal that encourages men to write about their life challenges.

MullenLowe’s We Listen Campaign For Samaritans

MullenLowe created this award-winning campaign for Samaritans, a group that supports people suffering from anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts. The campaign focused on the Samaritans as “expert listeners” and included striking photographic portraits and messages behind the claims to be fine, with a call to action for people to contact the organization if they need help.

Studio Myerscough’s and Lemn Sissay Children’s Hospital Project

Studio Myerscough is known for creating murals incorporating oversized lettering, brightly colored patterns and eye-popping motifs to cover walls, floors ceilings and furniture in children’s hospitals — with life-affirming effects. The agency collaborated with the poet Sissay and came up with exuberant wallpaper and stencilled seating for five dining rooms at Royal London Children’s Hospital.

Yet another example of the power of graphic design!
