A New Pope Means New Design
May 16, 2025
Unless you live under a rock, you may have heard the news that there’s a new pope in town. Pope Leo XIV just dropped his first official portrait and coat of arms, and wow, it’s a visual deep-dive into tradition, unity, and identity. From the rich red mozzetta (that’s the short jacket to all the non-Catholics out there), to the intricate stole and refreshed papal signature, every design element is intentional, balancing respect for the past with a nod toward the future. His coat of arms is equally rich with meaning: a blooming lily for the Virgin Mary, a burning heart on a book for Saint Augustine, and a fleur-de-lis to honor his French heritage. For designers, it’s a reminder that graphic identity, especially in legacy institutions, isn’t just about visuals. It’s storytelling, legacy, and messaging, all stitched into one.
